PGP 2025: IRCC to Send 17,860 Invitations Starting July 28 – Are You on the List?
Canadian citizens and permanent residents who’ve been waiting to sponsor their parents or grandparents — this could finally be your opportunity.
Starting July 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin sending out 17,860 invitations under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). The goal for this year is to accept 10,000 complete applications.
Who Will Receive an Invitation?
All invitations will be issued to potential sponsors who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form back in 2020. IRCC is not accepting new forms at this time. This means if you didn’t submit the form in 2020, you won’t be eligible for this round.
If you did apply in 2020, watch your inbox closely. The invitations will be sent out gradually over a two-week period, starting July 28.
What Is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?
The PGP is a family reunification program that allows Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada.
Due to high demand, IRCC uses a lottery-based selection process. You can only apply if you are randomly selected and receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Without an ITA, you cannot submit a sponsorship application under the PGP.
Didn’t Receive an Invitation? Consider the Super Visa
If you don’t get selected under the PGP this year, there’s still another pathway: the Super Visa program.
The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to visit their family in Canada for an extended period — much longer than a regular visitor visa.
Key benefits of the Super Visa:
- Allows stays of up to five years at a time
- Valid for up to 10 years
- Offers multiple entries during the validity period
Unlike the PGP, the Super Visa does not grant permanent residency, but it’s an excellent alternative for those who want their parents or grandparents to be with them in Canada longer term.
Super Visa Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a Super Visa, applicants must:
- Be admissible to Canada
- Purchase qualifying private medical insurance
- Have a host (the sponsor) who meets minimum income requirements
- Provide a signed letter of financial support from their host in Canada
Final Thoughts
The Parents and Grandparents Program is one of the most sought-after immigration streams — and also one of the most competitive. Whether you’re waiting for a PGP invitation or planning to apply for a Super Visa, accurate guidance and documentation are key to success.
