Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has rolled out a major improvement to its online processing times tool — offering greater clarity and personalization for those applying for Permanent Residence (PR) and Canadian Citizenship.

Applicants can now check real-time updates about their application status, including how many people are ahead of them in the queue and how much longer they can expect to wait for a decision. This is a significant step toward more transparency and better planning for those navigating Canada’s immigration journey.

What’s New in the Processing Time Tool

Previously, IRCC only displayed average processing times based on general data for each application type. These estimates didn’t reflect your actual place in line or consider your individual submission date.

Now, for certain application categories, the tool allows users to:
• Get a personalized estimate based on their actual application date
• See their position in the queue
• Compare their wait time with those applying now

This upgrade provides more accurate timelines, empowering applicants to make better decisions and plan accordingly.

How It Works: Two Simple Questions

When using the updated IRCC tool, applicants will now be prompted to answer:

  1. Have you already applied? Choose “Yes” or “No.”
  2. When did you apply? Select the month and year of your application submission.

Based on your responses, IRCC provides a tailored snapshot of your application’s current status.

Scenario 1: You’ve Already Submitted Your Application

Let’s say you applied months ago. Once you enter your submission date, you’ll get:
• An estimated time remaining until a decision is made
• The number of applicants ahead of you in the queue
• The total number of applications currently waiting to be processed
• A comparison with the processing time for new applicants today

Example:
Sally applied under the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) in May 2025. As of October 16, 2025, the tool tells her:
• Estimated time left: 26 months
• People ahead of her: About 9,500
• Total waiting in line: Approximately 13,100
• If applying today: 37 months processing time

Scenario 2: You Haven’t Applied Yet

If you’re still considering applying and haven’t submitted your documents, the tool can still provide:
• The estimated processing time if you were to apply now
• The total number of current applicants in that stream

Example:
Sally’s friend Rachel is preparing to apply under the same AIP program. She checks the tool and learns:
• Estimated processing time: 37 months
• Total number of people waiting: 13,100

This helps her decide when and how to submit her application, armed with real-time expectations.

Which Applications Are Included

This personalized processing feature is currently available for select programs, including:

Economic Immigration
• Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
• Express Entry (CEC, FSWP, PNP)
• Self-Employed Persons Program
• Start-up Visa
• Quebec Business Class

Family Sponsorship
• Spouse or common-law partner (inside/outside Canada)
• Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

Citizenship Applications
• Citizenship grants
• Citizenship certificates (proof of citizenship)

Other Categories
• Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) applications
• Protected persons and Convention refugees (in Canada)

Note: Some programs, such as sponsorship of dependent children or adopted children, are not yet included in the update.

Temporary Residence Applications: No Change (For Now)

This new tool does not yet apply to temporary visas like study permits, work permits, or visitor visas. These still show general average processing times.

Why This Matters for Applicants

This update is a game-changer for prospective immigrants. With better insight into your application status, you can:
• Reduce uncertainty and stress
• Make better financial, career, or relocation plans
• Set more accurate expectations for your family
