BOWP

Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) in Canada

The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) is designed for individuals in Canada who have applied for Permanent Residency (PR) under certain immigration programs and whose current work permit is about to expire. The BOWP enables these individuals to continue working legally while their PR application is being processed.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Permanent Residency Application: Must have submitted a PR application under the Express Entry system (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades) or other eligible immigration programs.
  • Current Work Permit: Must hold a valid work permit that is about to expire.
  • Application Status: Must be in a situation where you are eligible for the BOWP but not yet a permanent resident.

Application Process

  1. Submission: Applications for the BOWP can be submitted online or by paper.
  2. Required Documents: Include proof of the PR application, proof of current work permit, and other supporting documents as specified by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Key Features

  • Open Work Permit: Allows the holder to work for any employer and in any occupation.
  • Duration: The BOWP is typically valid until a decision is made on the PR application or for up to 12 months, whichever comes first.

Impact on Permanent Residency

  • Work Continuity: Helps bridge the gap between the expiration of the current work permit and the issuance of PR, ensuring that the applicant can continue to work and contribute to the Canadian economy.
